Almost every published author I know, myself included, gets a little obsessive about checking their ranking on amazon.com. We don’t mean to, but it’s one of the quickest ways to gauge how our books are doing (albeit not necessarily the most reliable as there are many other factors that contribute to a book’s success, but that’s a whole other post).

I can go for weeks (okay, maybe two) where I don’t check my ranking at all, and then in the span of one day, open up my browser and go to my amazon.com profile page 10-15 times.

Normally my books rank anywhere from the mid-20,000’s to the mid-200,000’s on amazon.com. When GOOD THINGS came out it went into the low hundreds on the Barnes & Noble ranking and kept dropping until it hit the B&N trade bestseller list. It did that twice, but of course by the time I got on there to see this miracle with my own eyes, it had started to climb back up. But my publisher and editor caught it, and I saw the data after the fact, so it was just as thrilling as if I had logged on and seen it myself.

So you can imagine my shock when I went to my profile page and saw the following ranking under my bibliography:

#4,453,334 in Books

What the ??? Either my popularity had really gone in the toilet or something was terribly wrong. Turns it, it was neither.

It was–or rather, is–TABLE MANNERS, my third novel and sequel to GOOD THINGS. That’s right. We’re nine months away before its pub date (hey! I could have another baby while we’re waiting!) and I’m still working on edits but you can actually pre-order the title right now for $10.20 (retails for $15). Where has the time gone? More importantly, will I get the manuscript finished in time?!

Stay tuned as I navigate through the holidays and finish the book. Editing and revising can be rough-going, but it’s a chance to make your book better. I already love it, and am excited by some of the surprises that have come up during the revisions. You’ll have to wait and see, but I promise it won’t be long!
