0061032085_sm.jpgI’m no book reviewer, and I am totally on island time which means that by the time I get to a book, it’s probably been out for a while. But that’s no reason not to talk about it, which is why I’m giving my two cents on Susan Elizabeth Philipps‘ AIN’T SHE SWEET? (No, she’s not talking about me – it’s the name of her book). Avon (Mass Market), 2004. ISBN 0-061-03208-5.

First, my qualifications — I have none (again, I’m not a book reviewer). But I am an author. I love to read, and, perhaps more importantly, I live in Hawaii, home of the ultimate summer beach reads, 365 days out of the year. And this book is one that you’ll enjoy having in your beach bag.

I’ll be honest – I’ve never read anything by Susan before, and it took me a while to warm up to her main character, Sugar Beth Carey, because she makes her so difficult to love, plus I was a bit ambiguous about the setting in Mississippi. But by page 20, I was hooked, and from that point on, it was a page turner (and, yes, you’ll fall for Sugar Beth despite her name). I’m not going to summarize the plot here since you can read about it on amazon.com or on Susan’s website, but I’m telling you that it’s a great, enjoyable read, especially if you like sass, humor, and humility all rolled up in your heroine. Good plot, a little mystery, great chemistry and several complex relationships are tightly woven together and satisfactorily resolved. My favorite passage was when she pretended to be from the Oprah show and the scene as Lady Francis Posh-Wicket.

If I had stars, I’d give this 4.5 out of 5. Let me know if you get a chance to read it and what you think of it!
