Cell phones aren't salvation in a tiny case; they can help a lot, but there are plenty of times when your party is unavailable, or you're forced to rely on yourself and whoever else is nearby. But I do think you need a little bit of an idea what's going on - I get so frustrated if a main character doesn't have a cell-phone in a time of need. At the same time, I know some writers set their stories back to a time more familiar to them, when characters had to rely on themselves instead of technology. Then I realize I'm way behind and thoroughly unhip. I don't have an iPod. I don't text. I barely know how to use my cell phone. And now there's an iPhone? Egads! Thankfully, you and Danielle are right -- good storytelling is about people, not what they carry in their purses.
