Reader Comments

Thank you for reading my books and for taking the time to tell me how much you’ve enjoyed them. Writing can be a reclusive endeavor, so hearing from you really makes my day!

I also really appreciate comments that are left on my book pages at amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, and Goodreads—all great places to go to see what people are saying about my books as well!

For TABLE MANNERS:

  • Food Loves Writing: The literary version of a romantic comedy and an incredibly easy companion. It’s a novel; it’s about a woman who knows food; it’s as engrossing as any chick flick, I swear. (You could blame my over-familiarity with that genre, perhaps, but I literally kept picturing the scenes on a giant screen, almost like I was reading Anne Hathaway in Devil Wears Prada.) Anyway, what I am most thankful for is that it was fiction, something my life has been lacking lately, what with all the literary essays and food memoirs and cookbooks. It was very nice to get lost in someone’s story for a little while, to escape into a plot with a happy ending (not that I’m giving anything away, ahem).
  • Book Binge: There’s a great story between these pages … A definite recommend.
  • Kitchen Rap: Entertaining … a light, foodie fiction tale, with a little romance thrown in for good measure.
  • Chocolate FingerprintsI adore Mia King! I first discovered her last year, when I reviewed her novel, SWEET LIFE, for Family Review Network. I loved that book so much that I immediately went out and bought her first novel, GOOD THINGS. After reading [her] books, I knew I was a Mia King fan for life … I think her biggest talent is her ability to write real, believable characters and relationships that readers can care about. Every time I read one of her books, I find myself totally swept away, not wanting to put the book aside for even a little while, yearning to know what happens next and how it all turns out.If you’re looking for a great novel with characters you can really care about, a novel that makes you want to read it all in one sitting, even if you can’t, you should read all of Mia King’s novels!
  • S. Krishna’s Books: I have heard great things about Mia King’s novels, especially considering she was one of the founding members of the Debutante Ball. I haven’t actually read any of her books until now, and after reading the thoroughly enjoyable TABLE MANNERS, I’m wondering why I waited so long to tackle her novels! … This book was well-written, with great characters and a plot that will suck you in. This is a great, light summer read that you shouldn’t miss if you’re a fan of chick lit or women’s fiction!
  • Starting Fresh: I’d come across GOOD THINGS by Mia King in the library a few months ago and loved it! I hid away in my room for a few hours and emerged with that happy feeling from a very satisfying book. I couldn’t wait for Mia’s sequel, TABLE MANNERS ... But just as I was about to start, I was worried that I wouldn’t enjoy the sequel as much as the first book because GOOD THINGS was just so fun. I couldn’t see how Mia King could add to Deirdre and Kevin’s love story. I was wrong again! TABLE MANNERS does just that! … I highly recommend TABLE MANNERS anyone looking for a fun love story.
  • The Clan McLeod: So what did I think about TABLE MANNERS? I gobbled it up in one sitting and found myself fully satisfied!I was really drawn into the lives of the characters and felt their struggles and victories. But beware, this book will make you hungry with all of the tempting foods mentioned along the way! Thankfully, Mia has included many of the fantastic recipes in the back and on her site. Mia has already begun her 4th novel, and, as an avid fan, I am eagerly awaiting its release! Will we meet back up to learn more about Deidre? Or, perhaps a visit with Marissa from SWEET LIFE? Maybe we’ll meet someone new altogether. I guess I’ll have to wait and see, but whomever it is, I’m certain I won’t be disappointed.
  • The Divining Wand: Indulge in reuniting or getting to know Mia King’s characters. And, once you’ve reached The End, go beyond her novel’s pages and discover those delicious recipes…what a treat!
  • One Literature Nut: A genuinely fun, great, escapist read … I found Mia King’s novel to be a fun, sweet success!

For SWEET LIFE:

In addition to all the wonderful reader emails I’ve been receiving about SWEET LIFE, there has been a flurry of wonderful blog reviews as well! Here are a few links:

  • Mom Central: Entertaining, heartwarming and incredibly passionate, SWEET LIFE is an excellent novel for all ages … A well-developed plot, rich setting descriptions and thoughtful character dialogue combine to make SWEET LIFE a deeply reflective novel.
  • So a Blonde Walks Into a Review: Don’t you love when you stumble upon a book that you can’t put down? I just finished such a book – SWEET LIFE by Mia King. With rich characters, an intriguing plot and an unforgettable message, this book is going down on my favorites list.
  • Feels Like Home: When I find a book I love, I sink down into it and roll around in it, enjoying every word, scene, and character. I stay up way past my bedtime devouring it, and I keep it within arm’s reach so that I can sneak in a few words at every idle opportunity. I become obsessed. This doesn’t happen very often, fortunately for my family. Since Grace was born, there have been only three books that really pulled me in: Little Earthquakes, A Thousand Splendid Suns and Gods in Alabama. Now, add SWEET LIFE to that list.
  • Did You See That?: An excellent book. Let me tell you, I lost some sleep over this one, staying up late to finish it; I just had to see how it ended. And it did not end the way I expected it to at all, which is a mark of great storytelling to me when the story doesn’t follow a tried and true (and boring) path. A bonus for me is the strong female protagonist – a career woman, a working mom, Marissa holds her own throughout the book and never compromises herself or her values. Woman power!
  • Centsible Mommy: I loved it!
  • Chocolate Fingerprints: I have reviewed quite a few books in my time, and sometimes I have to really tax my brain to try and come up with something good to say about them. With this book, it’s the opposite. I would be hard pressed to try to come up with something bad about it! I loved the characters, especially the four main women in the story. It got to the point where I felt like they were old friends, and when one of them would say something, I’d chuckle to myself, thinking, That’s just like  her to say something like that! To me, that is the mark of a really great writer: characters so life-like and believable that they jump off the page.
  • Brain Foggles: I read this book in two days. Ms. King has a way of drawing you in from the first chapter. The descriptions of her characters had me feeling like I’ve known them as friends. I thought I had all the answers to the issues written about but I was wrong and very surprised, in a good way.
  • Chotskies: A great chick lit book. Look to throw the covers over yourself and take to the couch for a quick, enjoyable read. This is THE book. I will be heading over to Amazon today to order her first book, Good Things and I eagerly await book 3 coming out next year.
  • The Clan McLeod: Mia made me feel like I was part of the story. I could see what the characters saw and almost feel the warm Hawaiian breezes floating through the room. I love that she includes a positive view of homeschooling in the book. That was a major plus for me.
  • The Dirty Shirt: Each character was richly written and took me on a roller coaster ride of emotions as they tried to find their “real” selves. Mia King has done an amazing job in describing the struggles most of us go through in the journey to finding ourselves. At times I felt that I was actually in Hawaii and she topped off this great book with amazing recipes that I for one can’t wait to try.
  • O Momma Writes: I couldn’t put this book down. I had it done within 24 hours after ripping open the amazon box while drinking my morning coffee. I found it so interesting to be emerged into the New York mind set, and then shifting to the culture of Hawaii. I have not been to either place, so it was neat to experience pieces of places through the characters. I loved how she developed the characters and the twists the plot I never would have guessed.  It was very entertaining!
  • Maria’s Space: The characters are real and the story possible. A great chick lit book. Looking to throw the covers over yourself and take to the couch for a quick, enjoyable read. This is the book. I will be heading over to Amazon today to order her first book, GOOD THINGS and I eagerly await book 3 coming out next year.
  • Sheltered Not Shattered: Although I normally read Christian fiction I will occasionally read other fiction and I am glad that I did. This is a down to earth story about a woman and the choices she must make in marriage, motherhood, and life. It took me only 2 days to read and that is b/c Hubby made me put it down and go to bed! I loved that the book had a positive attitude towards homeschooling also.
  • Joyfully Reviewed: This is a very moving and well-written story with characters easy to relate.  Mia King did a fantastic job with it; Marissa’s character grows and develops on so many levels.  I enjoyed SWEET LIFE and I thank Ms. King for such a wonderfully touching story.  I also thank her for the recipes she included at the end. Some were even vegan, whoo hoo!
  • Just a Mom’s Take on Things: It had been a while since I’d read a really good book that just pulled me right in and didn’t want to let go. I’d almost forgotten what that felt like, but remembered as soon as I got through the first few pages of SWEET LIFE. Marissa is a character that I really related to – not because she starts off as a wealthy urbanite completely dedicated to her career (almost completely my opposite), but because she struggles during the entire book to figure out what she really wants from her life and how to get it. As a mom, a wife, a woman and a professional. And that is something that I completely relate to. The story is believable, relatable, honest and touching. I’m very glad to have it on my bookshelf for whenever I want to read it again.
  • From Melissa’s Desk: This story is filled with memorable characters and dramatic situations. Many women will be able to relate to the issues and choices that Marissa deals with. It’s a great read that I’d recommend to anyone!
  • An Island Review: What I’ve really enjoyed so far is the way the Hawaiian culture and language is incorporated into this book. It’s not overwhelming to the point where non-locals won’t be able to understand the story line. It’s also a great way to get to know the Big Island of Hawaii and the special way the people there live their lives – away from all the hustle and bustle of Honolulu.
  • Mom of 2 Dancers: This book was a super quick read for me, only took a few days of reading. I have a longing to visit Hawaii now that I did not have before. I really enjoyed reading the background on some beliefs and customs of Hawaii. If that isn’t enough, the book is filled with great recipes!
  • Rockin Mama: Without spoiling it for you (you absolutely must read this book!) the book chronicles one woman’s “search for a sweeter life.” Mia King has a way of drawing the reader in, as he/she is right there amidst the island sunsets and beaches. Mia richly develops each character, making you feel as if you know them. There were times when I would start to tear up because I had become emotionally involved. That is the sign of a great book! With her intricate knowledge of the island, Mia has a way of subtly infusing island culture into the the story.

“I just finished SWEET LIFE this very day. Your ability to develop characters is amazing. Being an educator and a chef leaves me little time to “escape” in a book for pleasure. It was delightful to be taken “away” so quickly and not be disappointed in the journey.” Kathryn W. (WA)

“I wanted you to know your book was the best book I have read in years, I could not put it down.” Lee S.

For GOOD THINGS:

From Chick Lit Plus: “GOOD THINGS, the debut novel from Mia King is a must read for all chick lit fans. Each chapter left me wondering what was next from the head-strong and stubborn heroine, which way the plot was going to twist next with interesting character relationships, and the delicious recipes at the end of the book were an added bonus. A fresh and engaging take on a chick lit storyline, and a favorite of mine.”

“I just finished GOOD THINGS in 2 1/2 days. I loved it and can’t wait the next one!!” Darla M. (Oklahoma City, OK)

“I picked up a copy of GOOD THINGS yesterday afternoon, and found it impossible to put it down until it was completely read! You are a very talented author and I will look forward to reading your next novel.” Cheryl D. (Volcano, HI)

“I just finished reading your book and wanted to tell you it is great! I loved everything about it and was hooked in the first few pages. I was surprised when I was in the elevator in my office building and a complete stranger saw the book in my hand and asked me what I thought about it. I told her I thought it was fabulous and she said that all of her friends said the same thing and couldn’t wait to read it herself. My best friend is hosting her book club in a couple of months and is going to make GOOD THINGS the selection. I just printed the Book Club section from your web site to give her. I know she will love all of the suggestions for hosting. I’m also very sure that I’ll end up preparing your recipes, which I hear from my sister are delicious! I look forward to your next book and have now added you to my list of favorite authors!” Kathy H. (Fort Lauderdale, FL)

“I just finished reading your debut novel, GOOD THINGS, and I wanted to let you know that I thought the book was awesome! I am so glad I picked it up on impulse at Barnes and Nobles. I started the book on Saturday night and finished it Monday night, I could hardly put it down. I cannot wait to see with what you come out next with.” Kim J. (Frankfort, KY)

“I just finished GOOD THINGS and I loved it. We picked it as our May book club book and it is one of the best we’ve picked recently. I loved the characters and the story and was sad when I finished it. I hope she is planning on doing a sequel; I would love to see how Deidre handles planning a wedding, producing her show, launching products and whatever else life throws at her. I also love that recipes were included and I can’t wait to try them. I’ll be waiting to see what her next book is.” Julie S. (Park Ridge, IL)

“My husband had gone fishing for 4 glorious days. It’s cold and pouring down rain. All the elements I needed to be able to get lost in a couple of books that I had bought just for this occasion! One of those books just happened to be GOOD THINGS and, indeed, lost I got in Jacob’s Point and Lake Wish. I could not put this book down and I certainly did NOT want this book to end. Besides Deidre and Kevin, I fell in love with the characters of Lindsey (a steadfast and no-nonsense friend), William and Alain (who are a hoot) and Mrs. Everett (the most mysterious character in the book). I love the folklore and magic of Lake Wish. I am really hoping that Mia King will consider doing a series of Jacob’s Point books and delve deeper into the other characters as well (with guest appearances by Deidre and Kevin, of course). I have bookmarked her website and will be watching for whatever she may publish next! ps…I loved the quotes at the beginning of each chapter! pss…I was delighted when I turned the last page and there were all of the recipes from the book ~ especially the Fresh Salmon and Penne Salad with creamy, light Dill Dressing….yum!!! Thank you Mia King!!!” Donna T. (Hillsboro, MO)

“Just a quick “Thank You” for a delightful book. Can’t wait for the next one!!” Margaret S.

“I picked up GOOD THINGS while on vacation on the Big Island–lured by its local authorship and a clerk’s response that she’d just gotten the shipment and it was nearly sold out. I’d spied the last copy on a white wicker chair and grabbed it. It’s a great, fast, easy read with plenty of life lessons–mostly that the hiccups in life are usually replaced with deep invigorating breaths of fresh air. The writing is creative and descriptive. I loved it so much that I wanted to share it with the hostesses at our hotel, so I didn’t get a chance to try the recipes. They did sound awesome. GOOD THINGS is a great book if you have thirty minutes while the baby is napping, 15 minutes as you wait in a doctors office or are overlooking the Pacific. Should I keep watching for whales or keep reading? Tough one! Thanks to Mia King for helping my mind and soul take a vacation.” Jennifer T. (New Jersey)

“I am so glad I purchased this book! It was wonderful! I really enjoyed the storyline as well as the quotes at the beginning of each chapter that pertained to how to live your life more simply. I even wrote down several of them to post in my office. You are a truly gifted author and can’t wait to read more from you in the future!” Mary Beth H. (Henderson, NV)

“I picked up your book yesterday and I am more than half way thru it. Would love to read a sequel, so I hope that you are furiously writing and not just soaking up the sun in Hawaii. LUCKY YOU!!!!” Patricia C.

“Thank you for a WONDERFUL book! I bought it for my vacation to Mexico. I couldn’t put it down on the plane, was reading it in the customs line, and finished it the evening we arrived. As I read the book, I kept thinking – wow, these recipes sound great. I wish I knew how to make these things. Then to my surprise, some of the recipes were at the back of the book! I can’t wait to try some of them when I get back home (I loved the book so much I had to look up your website while poolside in Mexico!). I am definitely going to try the meatloaf, scones and cherry cookies. Thanks again for a great book – I will be recommending it to all of my friends & am looking forward to your next release.” Sharon M. (Vernon Hills, IL)

“Mia King has hit a homerun with her first novel. There is adventure, romance, tears, hope, and even a good recipe or two. I fell in love with the characters and found myself immersed in the plot before I could grab a cookie and cup of coffee. While the book is light and as easy to read as eating a piece chocolate cake, I found I learned some things about life through Deidre’s adventures. Mia, what’s next? Will the legends of Wish Lake produce more adventure?” Betti R.

“Wow!! Mia I am totally holding you responsible for my lack of sleep the past two days because Icouldn’t put the book down until it was finished!! I at times wished I was Deidre hanging out and baking in the middle of a peaceful small town! Can’t wait to try the recipes! Hurry up on your next book… I’ll be the first to buy it!” Kay B. (Idaho Falls, ID)
