Why I Write Happy Endings

Okay, now I know why I like–and write–stories with an HEA. A Happily Ever After.

My husband will tell you that I’m not much of a romantic, which I’m sad to say is true. But when I write, I find I’m pulled by the romantic potential between two characters. Even if the romance is a subplot or even just a factual FYI, I’ve got to have at least one relationship working out in my books. Life’s too discouraging, otherwise.

I figured this out when I heard Michael Bublé’s “Everything.” I got caught up in the backstory, which is that he wrote the song for his then-girlfriend, Emily Blunt (you might remember her from The Devil Wears Prada). They’d been together for over three years, seemed like a great couple, and his mother (his mother!) loved Emily.

“I love her,” Amber Bublé, 53, gushed to People last spring. “In fact if he doesn’t marry her, I’ll kill him. But we’d find someone in the family to marry her because we’re not letting her go, ever. She’s just the best thing ever and they’re perfect together.”

The official reason for the breakup was distance, which I’m sure was a contributing factor, but it sure didn’t help when the news that he was sleeping around came out.

Well, that pretty much killed the song for me. I had to listen to youtube covers of the song (some were really good, and some … well, let’s say that you can’t blame a person for trying) in order to get my fix of the song until I could start listening to the original version without going cross-eyed from frustration. But such is life, and these things happen, and I have to trust that there’s a good reason why. So, while I still wish the fairytale Bublé’-Blunt romance had stayed together, maybe such things are better left to fiction.

Here’s the original version of the song. It is, I have to say, still amazing.

    Hi Mia,

Good Things and Sweet Life have inspired me so much that every time someone asks me how is everything, I automatically reply, “Life is good…Life is sweet!” Mahalo nui loa:-)

And I’m a believer of HEAs!

Mia, as far as I’m concerned you’re 2 for 2 with book endings. And I’m so happy to know there’s a sequel to Good Things coming. I loved that couple!

Oh, I was sad to hear about this break-up, too. And I agree with Mary – Deidre and Kevin are a fabulous couple, and I can’t wait to see what happens in Table Manners.

By the way, I loved Sweet Life and sent my copy to my mom, who’s reading it now!
