Fresh tomatoes are most abundant at the end of the summer and are best when picked off the vine. Tomatoes purchased in grocery stores are picked early and even when ripened do not have the same taste or texture of a fresh tomato. Ripe tomatoes should be stored at room temperature, away from sunlight. Avoid storing them in the refrigerator, which will cause them to become pulpy and lose their flavor.
